DIY midi controller

Hello, Drambonauts!

I have been looking for a controller that would fit Drambo perfectly for a long time. But as I understand it does not exist))) So I set myself the idea of creating it.

I have already conducted several experiments and failed.

I do not have programming skills, because of this there are difficulties. But I have 3D modeling skills and can make a case for printing on a 3D printer. Perhaps there are the same enthusiasts here as me and we will join forces?

Or maybe someone has already made a similar device?

  • You know, the problem is in "would fit Drambo perfectly".

Drambo is what you make of it and there are so many different use cases that all require a specific "ideal" layout of controls.

    • DJ controller style for remixing tracks, compositions or crossfading preset sounds/loops (Hercules, Numark, Reloop...)
    • 4x4 dials (like yours above) for mixer and/or synth control (like in the Midi Fighter Twister, Arturia Beatstep...)
    • A layout optimized for pattern sequencing (Arturia Spark / Spark LE, Presonus Atom SQ...)
    • A controller with faders and step sequencer buttons (Akai APC series etc.)
    • A grid controller with only buttons for step sequencing (Novation Launchpads, Akai APC, and the newer sub-$50 chinese stuff)

So whatever you build, unless it'd a controller that will magically auto-move the hardware controls to wherever you need them, it will always be optimized to support a certain workflow.

  • I agree, Drambo can combine everything you want. But there is one thing that is inconvenient to do in Drambo - it is to turn the knobs. And there are many of them here - very many)) And there are so few controllers with a large number of knobs))

  • Some controllers support banks of controls (Behringer BCR and MIDI Fighter Twister do, amongst others) so that kinda multiplies the number of available knobs by switching banks.

Also, even more advanced MIDI controller mapping features are in the works, so by the time you would have your DIY controller finished, you might have what you need inside Drambo, like track level mappings.

These would allow you to map your controller on a track level, so you could have different mappings for each track, activated by the currently selected track.

  • Ooh, the last part sounds awesome. Thinking about a template with 8 sliders and 8 knobs on each track premapped to a korg nanokontrol ready to be mapped, when I want them :)

  • Good point, I have a Nanokontrol here too :)

I have a Faderfox EC-4. There are many banks and knobs. But switching tracks and pages is not synchronized. This causes inconvenience.

The update you are talking about will completely change the rules of the game. And then, as far as I understand, absolutely any controller will work. Especially Midi fighter twister.

If so, then I will probably wait!

  • I use a faderfox pc12. Ec4. Launchpad x, as controllers but still need loopy widgets ( a whole screen ) and another part screen.

    For midi lol.

Yet Drambo is kinda the software where you dont need any ( unlike other apps/hosts )
