Full support for external controllers / MIDI profiles in plug-in versions.

Drambo makes a great groovebox and sequencer, and the support for external controllers like the Launchpads is superb. It would be great to have the same MIDI mapping features the standalone version provides in the plug-in versions as well. This would mean access to both hardware and project MIDI profiles.

Another app called "Prism" has recently introduced an additional virtual MIDI output port that is used to route programming and feedback messages to external controllers. This allows to use the app with full Launchpad support inside hosts like AUM or LoopyPro. It would be great if it would be possible to do the same with Drambo as a plugin.

    After some experimentation I found out that it is in principle possible to use my Launchpad Mini MK3 as a groovebox controller for Drambo when it's loaded as a plugin. However it's a bit complicated and the use is very limited as Drambo only offers one set of MIDI input/output ports as a plugin. This means lots of possibilities for potential problems... For those who like experimentation here is how I created a project mapping that works in the plugin version:

    • Create a mapping for your MIDI controller in the standalone version of Drambo. You can for example create a simple copy of the "LP Mini MK3 Groovebox B" file found in On My iPad/Drambo/MIDI to work with.
    • Open the file in a text editor and replace all occurrences of "Launchpad Mini MK3 LPMiniMK3 MIDI Out" (or similar) with "AU MIDI input 1" (ignore the quotes).
    • Now replace all occurrences of "Launchpad Mini MK3 LPMiniMK3 MIDI In" with "MIDI out".
    • Save the file and open Drambo again.
    • Open the MIDI mappings editor in Drambo and open the MIDI profile list.
    • Tap on the (i) of your newly created profile to open the info page and then tap on "Copy".
    • Now tap on the (i) of the "Project" profile and tap on "Paste". It should now show the number of System mappings under "Project" in the list.
    • Close the MIDI mappings editor and save your Project.
    • Load Drambo as a plugin in a host like AUM.
    • Connect the Launchpad MIDI input / output ports (not DAW!) to the MIDI input output ports of the Drambo AUv3.
    • Load your project and the Launchpad should initialize and it should work with Drambo.

    Just a note: Prism isn't creating that port. It's just giving access to a 2nd port for that purpose that the hardware is providing. If the hardware doesn't provide such a secondary port then no app can create one for that purpose.

    If I load Prism into AUM with no controller (Launchpad) connected I can see clearly a second, independent virtual MIDI output port created by Prism. There are other apps like LK that offer multiple outputs as well so I think it should not be a big problem to have separate connections for controllers in Drambo.

    Sorry @catherder - I misunderstood. I thought you were referring to the hardware's second port. I'm not sure what a separate out will do for hardware that doesn't have two input ports.

    You're correct, any app can publish more than one midi output port. I should have read your post more carefully.
