Drambo+Drumkits
@giku I wonder if you have had any additional thoughts on a proper DrumKit for Drambo? I know a lot of us would be willing to IAP it if you released it.
I dream of custom DrumKits in Drambo I could use, share and sell :) Here's a very very rough idea of it. It definitely requires your love and attention to be properly positioned in Drambo.
I just think of all the MPC Heads who would love it...

Thats how I see it!
I wonder if using macro knobs (like in MIDI instrument module) instead of rack views of different sizes wouldn't be better.
That would be nice! Maybe have a little button, like on the xy-pad to open a resizable overlay for the 4x4 pads. And maybe have an optionally usable xy-pad on each pad:)
Sounds like a more powerful Rack module that also has layers, individual outputs and each layer can be selected by hitting a rack pad or a pad on the keyboard area.
XY pad position sounds possible. Y - velocity X - CV
That would be so cool(:
Another very cool possibility (I’m pushing it) would be if the pads could have different sizes/colors and arbitrary placement, even overlapping (which would trigger more than one pad at the intersection) on a detachable canvas
Thanks for jumping in to the conversation.
It would be great if we could unlock a Drambo DrumKit via IAP.
I know we’d gladly pay for that functionality
Per Pad ADSR, Gate, 16 Levels Pitch/Velocity, Probability, Routing, Effects and Drambo modularity would be phenomenal.
I would gladly pay for that
Flexible routing and maybe a pad state - instead of totally different set of modules on each pad, these pads are linked and retain same modules. But each pad state is its own parameter set. I think it would serve the note locks thing I’ve been dreaming of. While also allowing more conventional drum rack mode where each pad is its own rack.
Drag and drop copying pad to pad, pad state button gets held and copied pads are then linked to that pad state group.
Can we put a drum rack in a drum rack :) ?
Maybe a mixer view for quickly setting levels, pan, and sends
This needs to be FAST! So maybe automated copy functions if you play on an empty pad - copies or pad states the last played pad. A lot of the MPC style apps - and drum rack on ableton - are just sort of slow. Copying a pad takes too much time. Koala gets it right but it’s honestly so hard to use anything other than Drambo for me these days, I’m used to the flexibility.
@echoopera i think the visual layout looks great. I’d argue include a couple factory kits with the features you’re describing, but this sort of a module offers a fundamentally different workflow from what we have and is want it to be as flexible as possible. Blank drum kit is totally empty. Pad per midi note so 128 possible.
pad states / note locks has been totally transformative for me. It’s a really powerful workflow to have shared architecture and then per pad parameters. I think bundling this with a regular drum rack offers best of both worlds. Easy example is I have two samples I’m chopping up. First one I want a filter, pan and stereo width, and a reverb send per pad. Second one I have pitch, amp, and adsr per pad. Rather than duplicating these models on every pad, pad state groups would keep the same modules , and the different pads amount to different parameter saving. There’s need to be a way to do global vs pad edits. Why not just duplicate it? Automation, modulation, midi mapping - all that is easier (and probably more efficient) if it’s the same modules vs duplicated modules.
im not trying to hijack your thread or idea, but I have not seen this workflow exactly before. i have been feeling so creative with it, I want others to give it a try too.
there’s a lot of applications where a drum rack style layout might not make sense (or the routing might have restrictions, so @giku when/if you’re able to get to this, I’d still recommend a dedicated note lock module. I’ve got a good number of example use cases saved up.
No worries @bcrichards i posed the question as a provocation for @giku
i just want to be able to hand a Project to an MPC head and have them instantly get it.
4x4 pads with One Shots, Loops or Pitch per Pad and the best Step Sequencer in the business.
Drambo is already super deep and infinitely configurable. I just want this DrumKit to be of the KISS principle.
keep it simple…seriously 😂
i currently have this rig mostly setup with the Taktful rig, but it’s missing simplicity, and flexibility that only a proper DrumKit will bring to Drambo.
great discussion everyone 👊🏽🎚️💗
@echoopera If your screenshot contained a sequence, you would see POLY on each step, and that’s why the DrumKit module isn’t here yet :)
It needs another mode in the step sequencer (per note), then users would ask for polyrhytms within a single clip (because it's elsewhere), yet there is no per-note p-locking. It's an avalanche that needs an idea. I want to avoid adding more complexity to the main Drambo UI.
To be honest, i'd pay for another drambo with a complex sampler integration. While I fell in love with the synth/sequencer workflow, coming from sampler territory to drambo has left a noticeable void in my creative flow. Flexi sampler is alright, but it lacks quickness and responsiveness, resampling from tracks is a bit of a pain and while solutions like taktful work, they are not the most convenient and fast, especially in a live/jam situation. I tend to use koala rack in one of my tracks, but it has sync issues (host bpm has to be divided by 2 to work properly) and it is not the most convenient, so in effect i end up in standalone koala again and ditch drambo. Quick and effective sampler integration would be an absolute gamechanger in drambo for me.
I would +1 any efforts and to achieve it, be it mpc style pads or any other multi-sample on one track concept that speeds up the sampling workflow.
Feel free to open another thread and share your workflow. Let's call it Phrase sampler or Performance sampler.
btw. did you talk with Marek Bereza about that host BPM issue?
Just as a learning experience I tried building a concept of a drumming surface using multiple xy pads scattered on the screen (leaving transport visible)
only kick and snare because I realized soon this wouldn’t really work
iphone shot cause that was the most challenging (sometimes pads get off screen and there’s no way to bring them back except delete the XY module and start again—that also happens on ipad but is less likely ofc)
it works to capture a kick snare back bone, and with groove (using no quantization just how I like it), but the problem is latency. The screen doesn’t respond in time for trills and I’m better off going the old proven way with an external controller. Works ok for sparse rhythms and you can have fake mpe from the tap position
still if this was optimized in terms of latency, or there was a meta xy pad, like 4-in-1, you could perhaps limit it to 4 quadrants and in edit mode just set the center for a customizable playing surface
of course this would quadruple the number of outputs
and I don’t know if the latency thing on screen is even possible to improve
anyway it’s great to have an app you can go from concept to reality so fast
I will, thanks! Will probably also report a bug in koala, when I have some spare time.
I gave it some thought and I think it would be amazing just to have a dedicated sampler rack, with drambo modularity per pad. I know it can be accomplished with layering samplers and mapping the notes to layers, but when you add complexity and modulators per layer, combining with sections it gets a bit sketchy - it's quite slow to use, the sections are not folding back automatically when switching layers and it creates some problems with huge blank spaces in a rack. It is also very cpu heavy, so the convenient implementation of resampling processed sound to the new pad would be a big cpu saver. I'm personally fine with sequencer limitations and I can finger drum and/or edit the sequence in a piano roll.
My idea would be:
a separate sampler rack with a sample crate (could be a 4x4 or add as many as you want with a + button) with some nice drag and drop features like moving, duplicating and merging and maybe being able to name your pads.
The next part could be specifying a sampler input(s): track(s), pad(s), or audio in.
Then, a placeholder for a sampler type of your choice (per pad) and then whatever modules you want to add (per pad)
This would require implementing some rack-wise ui logic for switching pads' parameters to make it tidy and responsive, but it would keep things way more convenient, especially if you could create sampler rack presets and keep them within the rack and not as separate instruments like you have to do now when using instruments like Taktful Drambo or similar concepts.
I might be misunderstanding what you’re suggesting but, if @giku were to pursue this, it’d definitely be worth reminding himself of the superb implementation of this type of drumming interface in DrumJam and the various similar types of interface ideas in Beatsurfing 2.
I always just wanted actual auv3 looking modules ( but now I like the Drambo modules ) like eq, limiter etc.
Just so you had synth modules per track
If auv3. perhaps a suite of different engines to get around ios max limit for auv3 amounts.
but thats for future ipads ( I guess for power ) and iv always used an ipad just for drums anyway.
Heres the ipad just for drums.
Where its just for drums.
Seems I can have a load of dummy tracks for easy sampling ( where it just a drum ipad ) The template can be bigger.
You load a saved track ( with a name and a + ) you remove track by loading a track save without the + ) Conviently always in the right place in the menu from last load save ( + or not )
Its got everything on a track basis.
I use another ipad for pad triggers.
Iv got a performace style layout trigger pads.
Then a multi layout pads that works well for all the different sample tracks that that can be loaded ( some aus have 16 hits etc )
https://youtu.be/SR9qHkoNC2s
lol.
It can even afford eq, adsr, etc on the sampling tracks ( just to audition what it might sound like ) before it goes on an actual track, where there will be the same eq, adsr etc.
Im able to make the drums pretty glitch also.
Id still perhaps see it as more of a 909, 808, or aucoustic drum machine even though it can glitch.
Or I need sexy piano roll or midi.
Otherwise I use an auv3 drum machine ( perhaps something like batalion )
