Drambo Looper module threshold record start?
Okay, so I’m having problems recording in the new Looper without having a bit of silence at the beginning of the loop. I’m a bit surprised that it doesn’t have a threshold function built in as an option to start recording to be honest.
As usual, I expect I’m missing something!
There is the Gate/Action input which can be used to initiate recording exactly as the input is made but if it’s a AU instrument you’re recording in, a second press on the keyboard stops recording again! Taking the signal from a noise gate obviously has the same problem.
There’s options for ending loops after a specified duration but nothing to ensure that the loop only begins as the sound is heard so that the loop is perfect at the beginning as well.
What am I missing, how do you ensure that the first loop is perfect at the beginning as well as the end? Cheers.

Would a Trig/Gate switch for the Action input help?
You could also delay the Action signal to eliminate latency.
Loopers usually work with key triggers to avoid the need for setting thresholds, and the end of the loop needs to be a deliberately triggered action anyway.
Thanks as always @rs2000. Yes, a Trig/Gate switch for the Action input would solve it perfectly. Is that something I can set up currently or would it have to be implemented by @giku?
Or, a count-in option (with silent visual count in option like Loopy Pro) could work?
Plenty of loopers have optional threshold triggers don’t they? Circa, Loopy Pro? And I don’t understand what you mean by the end of the loop being triggered deliberately? If you set the loop length in the Drambo Looper, it automatically stops after that duration - thus creating a perfect loop length except for the sound not starting exactly at the beginning, hence my initial problem and enquiry.
By the way, I also noticed that there’s no way to manually trim the loop when the waveform is opened - is that deliberate?
@rs2000, sorry to bother you; is a Trig/Gate switch for the Action input@rs2000 something I can set up using current modules?
Well yes ... actually it's quite easy.
Route your gate signal to looper's Action input and to Gate Inverter module. Then route the output of Gate Inverter to "Stop" input of Looper. Done.
Yes, @giku knows about the lack of waveform editing, let's remind him ;)
Great, thank you very much @rs2000. Cheers.
Just tried it and it works perfectly, thank you very much @rs2000. I would never, in a million years, worked out how to do that on my own!
If anyone else reads this looking to do the same, be sure to follow @rs2000‘s instructions exactly - on my first try I didn’t notice that I was to connect the gate signal to the looper’s Action input AND the gate inverter module.
As feedback, @giku, this still seems like a complicated (for non experts) solution to something which I think should be straightforward in a looper. I’d still suggest that there should be something built into the module to, optionally, allow recording to only start as the first sound is made. Cheers.
@rs2000 to the rescue 🙏
appreciate it myself cause I’m dabbling with it as well at the moment
Enjoy your loopings :)
Same. I figured I'd at least try this new looper, though I honestly don't see myself using this kind of thing. I'm more of a loop creator, than a loop looper I guess.
Hey guys, what are the key differences between using this new looper, or the Flexi Sampler in loop mode?
@Robin I hope you don't mind, I figured this a relevant thread to ask.
@Intrepolicious We all know the live-looping style artists who layer their voice, instruments, percussion etc. one by one to end up with a full loop composition.
The idea of Looper is to serve this workflow better/more easily than Flexi, including an "Undo" function to remove the last take only. Map these two buttons to Bluetooth/hardware switches and you have a looper pedal in a phone, if you will.
Remember these cheapo BT game controllers? Time to dig them out again!
I get it. I mean I get what loopers are, and how they're used. You did answer my question though, which I guess was obvious, in that the main differences are the mappable start/stop/rec/undo functions. (I mean the gate connections)
Thanks @rs2000 🙂
Now that I'm thinking about this more, I reckon I would actually find a place for this in my workflow, where I'd sometimes use the Loopy Pro AU to record audio from expressive midi performances, like MPE expression from GeoShred and the like.
edit: I don't think I saw it in the help file; what is the maximum recording length?
I made a loop, but how do I get it to play with the transport? I placed a trigger c1 on the first pad and amici to cv module before it, but I can't see how to make it play. It would be great to see a play or transport setting.
