Controller for AU Host Mode
With the new AU host update, it’s even more important now to have a great Midi controller to mate with Drambo, besides the usual suspects, such as the LaunchControl XL, Nano Control, etc. what else is worth considering? It must have plenty of knobs for mapping to the AU parameters, is there such beast? 😋
Please post your recommendations.

For most synth knob adjustments, I prefer MIDI controllers with encoders over pots. If you use the cheaper pots, when turning a knob after you've changed a preset, the value will always jump from the value stored in the preset to the value the hardware knob currently sits at.
Drambo is one of the few apps that supports these!
Examples: Arturia Beatstep, Faderfox controllers with encoders, Behringer BCN/BCR, some Novation controllers...
Very good point, so that leave us with even less to pick from... maybe the new Behringer bcr64 will work with iOS, if not it’s back to the old bcr2000...
BCR64 Whaaaat?? This would be great!
The BCR has one of the best and flexible MIDI implementations so I hope enough people vote for it on the FB page.
I use AKAI APC40 as the main controller, it has everything you need plus some more 🙂
Then I have extra Korg Nanokey studio to have velocity sensitive pads + velocity sensitive keys with nice features like scales, arp, chords,... This combo covers really A LOT, for me actually everything I should ever need.
Nice and compact. Thanks for sharing.
Expensive and hard to get...
16 knobs only.
Just lovely...
How do you set this up when mapping the controller? I have a midi fighter twister but when mapping it ‘absolute’ it still jumps. It has a Enc 3FH/41H mode but I didn’t get it to work.
I take 3F as the decrement and 41 as the increment value, correct?
If so, mapping CC # 23 would look like this:
there are 4 pad banks so its 128 buttons u can do whatever with
and 4 knobs and faders with 3 banks, (24)
More knobs, please... 😁
I use my Beatstep and it works great. Especially because it supports increment/decrement. Also its 2 rows of 8 pads, just like Drambo. But I do wish it had a few additional buttons.
I've been limiting my knob mappings to things I want to tweak live. With that I've been trying to embrace the limitation by writing pieces with less parts and mapping more parameters per track. Most of what I listen to is weird glitchy electronic stuff with only a few parts anyways. Also... incorporating a few pieces of hardware that have many knobs :P. This will be even better once we get multi-input.
With controllers, what I really hope for is a way to enter notes on the grid. But supporting that with note offsets, length, pitch etc will take some work, and there are so many rad things to be worked on in Drambo. But it would be amazing to hold down a pad to create/edit a note and then twist a few knobs to set the note params.
There was a midi controller for dx7 once that had an absurd amount of knobs 😆https://www.sequencer.de/blog/jellinghaus-dx-programmer-for-horror-prices/2395
I wonder if that will help us make better FM sounds 😁
Another option, especially if you already have the Circuit.

Will try tonight, thanks!
Man how I wish for an iOS editor for the midi fighter twister. Now I have to borrow my girlfriends laptop each time I want to change the setup.
Why not keep a fixed config on the Twister and just save the mappings with each project?
What FB page? 🤔
Got it, thanks.
Serious business...
Looks like an iPad with Lemur inside 😉
If it had a touchscreen - even a cheap one - that might justify the rather pricey 499 €...
I'm using a Faderfox UC4, only 8 knobs per scene but you can easily switch between 8 scenes. Plus it has a crossfader, 8 faders, 8 buttons...and can be programmed from the unit itself (no need for a desktop program)
Looks like a good companion indeed!
Does it work with Bluetooth MIDI dongles?
Previous models completely failed in this regard.
Unfortunately I can't comment, I've never used a Bluetooth MIDI dongle.
It doesn't run on batteries though, so will always need a cable of some sort....otherwise I'd be curious to test it with a dongle.
Because I also use my twister with my Octatrack and Roland MC707 (2 pages each), and I like to use the twister in absolute mode to get visual feedback, and have some secondary functions working. And some have a center detent. :)
switching from hardware, to for example Octa and iPad with Drambo and Drum Computer requires me to switch presets on the twister. Also, when working on a mapping in Drambo I noticed I want to change the colors or knob behavior on the twister. First world problems, I know... :)
