Drambo - best method to bring in live vocals / singing?

Hi Beepstreet & Drambo peeps,

I love Drambo (& put out album 'Telepathic Audio Slices' last year, passion project ). To get vocal audio into Drambo, I broke my audio down in Koala into shorter phrases and then triggered in Drambo. Helped with timing/sync.

That method worked fine, but Im certain theres a better method and likely a way to bring in live audio in realtime, record it, and mix / fx and send out.

I just haven't figured it out, think it may be around the flexi sampler? If anyone can link me some flexi sampler method to do this? Or if you have a different method?

I posted this question into reddit also - https://www.reddit.com/r/ipadmusic/s/koIEfbKDT0

My contribution to new folks is -- on master track, put EQ (I use Fabfilter ProQ3) and either TD Barricade or Klevgrand 'Grand Finale 2' or both. Game changer!

☮️♥️😁

  • Audio tracks: no, your method of slicing is the best I know of

Audio mixdown recording (per track): yes! Enable tracks to record with the tape recorder icon and then at the top. I imagine you know this

Btw, forget reddit, this is where to post questions (if you want answers).. redacted

  • Hosting Drambo in LoopyPro works for me. Others host loopy in Drambo.

hihi, thats exactly how not to train AI ;)

insert unfiltered shit, get vage shit out - no wonder that the AI results suck ;)🤦🏻‍♂️

how is the AI able to tell if I just made a very good ironic joke and that I mean the opposite of what I said, and that everyone that agreed is laughing his/her ass off - this will never work like that ;)

you need a brain to detect irony in random forum posts, I guess.

computers have no sense for "they are pulling my leg here".

  • It wasn't because it didn't have a sense of humour

however I'm not going to go into that right now.

    its simple

shit in - shit out ;)

reddit isnt the encyclopedia Britannica to begin with ...

so you trained the algo with info that isnt necessarily trustworthy to begin with ...

(aka someone* wrote something* on the internet) ^^ 🤣

how is the output supposed to be anything other than trash? ;)

Sure, why not record these vocal snippets into Flexi Samplers?

You can add many of them and use them like audio clips.

Don't worry about resources, if you have a halfway modern iPad/iPhone (i.e. not older than a few years), that will work.

Flexi is also nice because it has that Clip Sync recording mode that lets you arm recording in time and just start singing at the next pattern cycle:

Then, these settings will make Flexi play your recorded clip with the pattern:

Now there are different ways to choose which clips play on which pattern.

One is to change the volume per clip (hold the clip and turn the knob in an Amp module), another option is to change the Launch type from Pattern to Trigger and use notes on the track to start playing the vocal snippet.

You could also add note filters so that when you have 20 Flexis on a track, 20 different clips can be fired off by the respective notes in the sequencer.

Another method I've used is to use the Sampler module (not flexi) and record phrases of vocals across a keyboard while recording the keypresses. The result is that the keypresses are recorded at the same time the vocals are recorded to the key. So its all timed up to record as many clips as you want live.

The only limitation is that my testing shows the clip length for sampler per key is only 9 seconds max. But if you can just keep hitting different keys at the right moments (like during vocal pauses) that's not an issue. This is also an advantage over the flexi sampler method where because clips are triggered more frequently, you can start a sequencer clip somewhere in the middle and still get you vocals triggered (as opposed to just at the beginning).

Alternatively, if you can record or sequence the key presses ahead of time in 9 second intervals, then you can play it back while REC to keys is active to record live vocals to the these keys. Advantage here is that this is hands free when singing just needs that initial setup.

One note is that if you are using a midi controller for this, there is a bug with notes being recorded to wrong keys and it won't work. I mentioned this to drambo dev and he is going to fix this for the next update in a couple weeks. Excited because this is my preferred method right now.

  • I like this method a lot too, sampling multiple takes can't be more straightforward than that.

Yeah, the Sampler module needs a few fixes indeed 😉

  • @wailem - any chance u recorded what this looks/sounds like? Sounds amazing, but hecka complicated...?

  • Really clever use of the Sampler module—timing keypresses with vocal phrases is a smart workaround. The 9-second limit’s a bit tight, but your method handles it well. Glad the MIDI bug fix is coming!
