How do we Create a DrumKit we can play Chromatically?

edited June 5 in How to's

I was curious if anyone had any ideas how we might be able to create a Drumkit in Drambo that we could also play each Sound in the Kit Chromatically?

I am wanting to recreate what we can do on the Ableton Move, Digitakt and other types of Samplers which allow one to play their Samples as One Shots or Chromatic Notes.

I was trying to leverage this device to do it, but I'm a little out of my element on how to reroute the signal flow to achieve both One Shot and Chromatic Note playback, since each One-Shot is assigned to a Note in this device.

Thanks!

on the iOS side, BM3 does this very very well. You pick a One Shot Pad, and go into NOTE mode to play it back Chromatically.

  • I don't really know the workflows of the hardware you mentioned, but I have some ideas, how to be able to play the samples in a drumrack also chromatically.

What I could imagine would be a switch to select which sample to play chromatically and a keyboard split, maybe c3 and up to play the selected sample. For recording there could be a midi-sequencer module (or a layers switch with several) followed by a midi2cv on each layer before the sampler.

    Would that come close?

  • Thanks @tyslothrop1 It needs to be something like that. A control to either play in ONE SHOT or NOTE Mode at the DrumKit level.

Right now, Drambo doesn't have the concept of a DrumKit like BM3 for example so the Taktful device was created by someone to Mimic the Digitakt...it's fantastic btw.

But...I just want to be able to play that one 808 sound at different Pitches and having a OneShot or Note mode toggle on the Rack would be ideal.

I just have no idea how to do that :)

For the sake of simplicity, I'd use a simple multisample drum kit and p-lock the pitches to sequencer steps.

Or add a Gate&Velocity Sequencer that controls Flexi's or Sampler's pitch. If you need semitones, you can set the Y Grid in the GV Sequencer accordingly. And remember that 0.125 means one octave in Drambo pitch.

Another option is to use Sampler and map each drum instrument over one octave (or whatever pitch range makes sense to you) so you can get to different drum instruments by switching octaves on your MIDI keyboard.

Your idea is likely possible to build as well, I'd need to think about a way to make it fun to use.

  • I'm looking at the patch now, a keyboard split would be relatively easy. Using the same keyboard range as the one-shots would be harder, I think. I'll give it a try, should be quick.

  • This has a button which switches from one shot to note mode. With some additional finagling or a different structure, you could have it retain the last played pitch in one shot mode, per sample.

I’ve put a midi switch into the first layer, 1 is OneShot mode, 2 chromatic. I’ve made the keyboard split c4 and up because the 8th layer is on c3.

I’ve also put in a sequencer for recording, although thinking about it now, with the keyboard split, you can just use the track’s sequencer, as long as you only want to play one sample chromatically. You could have more than one keyboard split, if you want to play more than one sample chromatically.

If it’s useful I could do more.

  • @bcrichards YOU ARE THE MAN!!!

  • thanks @tyslothrop1 this is really cool. Gonna have to unpack this one to see how to best play it from an external Midi Controller like the LaunchPad or LaunchKeys...

    So freaking cool.

Thank you both for the insight on this.

One of the big goals of this as well, is to be able to Record the Pitches to the Step Sequencer. I really want to have a BM3 style DrumKit in Drambo that allows us to play Samples as One Shots or Notes.

I haven't fully thought it through, but ...

What about just using a plugin Drambo instance with he same sample or kit, but set up for chromatic play, inside Drambo? Then just N-1 or Layer switch between them.

  • That hurts my brain 🤣

I'm working on a drumrack, that lets you assign one or more of (the same) 6 keyboard ranges to play chromatically for each sample plus one shot with FX inspired by Ableton 12's Drum Sampler and Sends per Sample to send to Drambos A and B Sends (if that makes sends). I'll upload it to patch storage, when it's done, the connecting, that unfortunately seems like it needs to be done per layer, is a bit tedious.

Phenomenal! Maybe we can poke @giku for a proper 16 Pad DrumKit with One Shot and Note playback so we can finally ditch BM3 on the iPad 😁

  • I want it as a native Drambo solution 🤓

  • I wish it was as easy as it is in Logic using DMD where the top/main track triggers the sounds the other tracks with a specified note and selecting one of the destination tracks allows one to play the sound chromatically...

  • Looking at the Sampler with its Pitch input determining the played drum instrument instrument and the Pitch knob allowing for transposition across +/- 2 octaves, that's another simple option.

  • Can that be recorded in real time though as you move across the playable octaves?

In BM3 it's crazy easy, tap the pad you wish to play chromatically and switch to 'keys' mode and play/record away.

Each pad at 'bank level' can use what ever one likes, samples, AUv3's etc.
