“Rewired - feat’ an all star cast”,

The beginning of last nights jam session when I was soundchecking.

It starts to get interesting around the 8min mark.

feat’

Moog Werkstatt

Behringer Crave

Korg NTS-1

teenage engineering low pass filters

Novation Launchpad X

Novation LaunchControl XL

Air 3

iPhone 7

various distortion pedals and miscellaneous outboard dRambo for automation,

sequencing, controlling external modulation and effects processing.

  • Excellent jam. Looks like it was a blast too

  • Thank you.

Yeah, it was a blast, the iPhone ran out of storage

midway through warm up which is just as well. ;)

  • Wow. Beautiful composition.

    I love your style.

  • @rs2000 thank you brother.🙏🏾

    :)

    "various distortion pedals"

what exactly are you using for overdrive/distortion?

(lots of these are noisy as hell and dont work well with synths)

and what do you use as audio interface to get it in and out?

    looking at these 2 now

(the Waza stuff seems great, they got rid of the noise :) )

  • 1 x Award Session Studiomaster

    1 Marshall DriveMaster

    1 x Crunch distortion

    1 x Ultimate drive

4 x dyna compressors ( one for each distortion pedal)

They are connected to inputs and outputs 3-6 on my Behringer UMC1820

permanently so that I can easily route stuff through them without thinking.

I’ve also designed a tool that corrects for Latency within 5-10 samples so that I can play around with Phase inversion,

it’s the most accurate I’ve achieved so far in regards to phase cancellation

and the technique is transferable to other DAW’s.

Line level signal is too hot for the distortion pedals so I attenuate the Audio output signal

in dRambo by -12db and I ‘m using D.I boxes for the return with the analog inputs set to -12db on input.

The -12db signal level is an arbitrary number picked by myself as it gives me plenty of headphone

which I can effectively use without distorting the inputs and outputs

because the preamps on the UMC1820 can get a bit harsh when pushed.

When I set the inputs/outputs to -7db the sound can get very edgy which

is good to know when that’s the desired effect.

The noise floor is higher than normal because of the nature of guitar distortion pedals

including power hum etc from both the audio interface and the pedals.

So a clean signal as possible when the pedals are not active and when active

as much distortion and colours of distortion that I would need.

I haven’t tried them yet on the physical synths that I have but their purpose

is actually for drum sounds hence the dynacompresors.

The dyna compressors are definitely not studio compressors however

they have a character of their own which is fun to play with.

  • Oh and for getting rid of noise? I use the noise gate module in dRambo or whatever DAW I’m using

which is the main advantage of being able to route signals out and then back in again

    using an audio interface.

I did mess up my synth with stomp boxes in the 90s,

it was very noisy in an uncool way.

Im have the illusion that they are much better sound quality now,

I hope overdrive isnt totally drowned in noise floor anymore...

I need to try this again. :)

  • The main thing with stomp boxes and quality of sound is getting

the impedance matching sorted otherwise the tone just disappears.

I like pushing the pedals to get noise in a pleasing way which I can then further shape with filters etc.

    Super fun on oscillators.

It’s worth taking the time time experimenting to get the balance right.

the demos I found online sound way less noisy - the old boss stuff I used used to have the background noise of a train station. ^^

and I had one of those awful 90s behringer mixers, that didnt make things any better.

    so im hopeful. :)

lets see what analog can do in 2023.

im ready to be amazed, Waza me up, mr. boss/roland. ^^

    Analog is brilliant these days.

I came across a SubZero mixer last year

which is made out of cheap plastic however

it’s noise floor is really good for the price.

    I got mine 2nd for £40.

I was very surprised as along with that it

has a simple stereo audio interface built in.

    Brand new it’s between £80-£100.

Twenty years ago you would’ve been

paying through the nose for the equivalent

    quality.

Woah man, I should have listened to this earlier, you got swing! Gotta let me known how you do that. Trust me, I can recognize swing up to single-digit milliseconds.

    very nice job, congratulations

  • Well, you listened eventually.

    Thank you for listening,

That bass sounds really sweet. Is that the Crave's direct out? Or the TE filters imvolved?

And I hear some stereo f/x too

  • It’s the Craves direct out with side chain compression

and simple eq on the Master Bus.

I’m also using the FDN which is being modulated by an Env generator

and mixing between the dry signal and the wet.

There’s also dRambo’s reverb on Bus B with an external reverb for the entire synth mix.

The TE filters are currently on drum loops until I decided to tune them again. :)

  • I must add that I’m also modulating the

Craves oscillator with the one from

the Werkstatt a fifth above which adds

    an extra touch of juiciness.

  • So… quite a lot going on 😅

thanks for breaking it down, I caught like 80% but even though I got some inspiration

  • Definitely a lot going on.

I haven’t even started focusing on what’s actually going on with dRambo as dRambo is modulating everything

that can be modulated and then there’s the CV attenuation and scaling, step sequencers, effects, latency correction

and it just goes on. 😂

I’ve even put together a CV tuner for when voltages have been scaled up and it’s not precise

so one can go in and correct voltages per note across the entire keyboard which is very useful

amd saves quite a bit of dough over getting a physical Precision Adder module or modules.

  • Oh in regards to swing?

This track is from when I still used to play percussion.

    Obviously it’s over dubbed.

    Swing is very important.

  • Fantastic jam! I could swear I commented on this already? Maybe it was over there on ABF, I remember making a comment on your setup there, with the Crave and all.

Either way, awesome stuff man. Keep it up! Always inspiring!

Yeah you did, it was much appreciated.

    Thank you.

There’s more on the horizon. 😏
